The first month in the life of a baby is the neonatal period.
There is a wide range of surgical procedures that need to be performed in the neonatal period or at the birth of the child as life-saving measures, especially for birth defects. Surgeries for Imperforate anus, Tracheoesophageal fistulas, Intestinal Atresias, Malrotation of the gut being commonly done once.
There was a false belief in society that children undergoing these procedures have a very poor prognosis and do not survive. With the improvement in technology and excellent NICU care, we have seen, operated, and managed a number of neonates with these problems and they have grown well and healthy.
Birth injuries and injection site abscess also form a significant quantum of neonatal diseases. Bedside procedures like umbilical catheter insertion and venesection in newborns are lifesaving procedures when venous access is not available. Abdominal drain insertion is done in cases of perforation secondary to Necrotising Enterocolitis.
